Gary Keady founded That Record Company in 1979, establishing it as a pioneering independent label distributed by M7/Powderworks Records in Brookvale, NSW.
In 1983, he rebranded the label as Big Island Records and launched the music publishing company Big Island Ripper Tunes, administered by Chappell Music.
By 1985, operating from a small terrace office in Forbes Street, Woolloomooloo, Big Island Records—now distributed by RCA—was releasing singles, LPs, and producing music videos for its artists. That same year, Gary transitioned the label into Big Island Productions, expanding into musical cinema shorts and later, in 1988, producing the award winning musical feature film Sons of Steel.
Today, with Gary’s son Brandon on board, Big Island Productions—alongside its sister company, E-Motion Records—remains proudly independent, releasing music directly to global digital platforms.
